A verbal adverb compresses a second action into one clause: imperfective verbs form it with -я (читая, говоря), perfective ones with -в (прочитав, сказав). It never changes form, and its action must belong to the same subject as the main verb — a marker of bookish, formal register.
Examples
- Читая эту статью, я вспомнил наш разговор.
- While reading this article, I remembered our conversation.
- Прочитав письмо, она сразу ответила.
- Having read the letter, she replied at once.
- Не зная деталей, трудно судить.
- Not knowing the details, it is hard to judge.
- Он ушёл, ничего не сказав.
- He left without saying anything.
The mistake to avoid
Attaching it to a different subject ("Читая статью, мне позвонили") — a classic error that native editors flag immediately.
