Six Cyrillic letters look like English ones but stand for other sounds. Р is r, Н is n, В is v and С is s. У is the oo of 'food', and Х is a breathy kh, like the ch in Scottish 'loch'. The small letters в and н look like small capitals B and H - read them v and n too.
Examples
- ресторан
- restaurant - р is r, с is s, н is n: res-ta-RAN
- сувенир
- souvenir - у is oo, в is v: su-vi-NIR
- хоккей
- hockey - х is kh: kha-KAY
The mistake to avoid
Don't read Р as p, Н as h or В as b: ресторан is res-ta-RAN, never 'pectopah'.
