To tell a stranger what to do — which is how street directions are given and received — use the plural 'voi' form of the present tense on its own, with no pronoun: mergeți, luați, coborâți, faceți. It is identical to the present tense, so 'mergeți' is both 'you (polite) go' and 'go!'. For a negative command, just add 'nu' in front: nu coborâți aici.
Examples
- Mergeți drept înainte, apoi luați-o la dreapta.
- Go straight ahead, then turn right.
- Luați autobuzul 32 și coborâți la a treia stație.
- Take bus 32 and get off at the third stop.
- Nu coborâți aici, hotelul e mai departe.
- Don't get off here, the hotel is further on.
- Scuzați-mă, îmi puteți spune unde e gara?
- Excuse me, can you tell me where the station is?
The mistake to avoid
Learners use the singular imperative (mergi, ia, coboară) with strangers, which sounds abrupt — with anyone you don't know, always use the -ți plural form.
