Romanian builds the past tense with a short auxiliary form of "a avea" (am, ai, a, am, ați, au) followed by the past participle: am vorbit, ai vorbit, a vorbit. The participle never changes — it stays the same no matter who the subject is or whether they are masculine, feminine, singular or plural. Put "nu" and any reflexive pronoun before the auxiliary, not before the participle: nu am fost, m-am întors.
Examples
- Ieri am lucrat până la ora opt.
- Yesterday I worked until eight o'clock.
- Maria a plecat la șapte, iar părinții ei au plecat mai târziu.
- Maria left at seven, and her parents left later.
- Nu am fost niciodată în Asia.
- I have never been to Asia.
- Weekendul trecut m-am întors duminică seara.
- Last weekend I came back on Sunday evening.
The mistake to avoid
Learners use the full present forms of "a avea" as the auxiliary (❌ "are plecat", "avem mâncat") instead of the short set — it is always "a plecat", "am mâncat".
Where this fits in
A vorbi despre trecut, Romanian A2: A povesti ce ai făcut ieri, weekendul trecut și experiențele tale de viață folosind perfectul compus.
