Romanian's gerund adds -ând to the verb stem (lucrând, văzând, mergând), or -ind for verbs whose infinitive ends in -i (citind, fugind). It does what English -ing does in "reading the paper, I found out": an action happening at the same time as the main verb, or the reason for it. A reflexive pronoun or object clitic is attached to its end with -u-: uitându-se, văzându-l.
Examples
- Citind ziarul, am aflat de grevă.
- Reading the newspaper, I found out about the strike.
- A răspuns zâmbind.
- He answered smiling.
- Neavând bilet, a rămas afară.
- Not having a ticket, he stayed outside.
- Uitându-se pe fereastră, a văzut accidentul.
- Looking out of the window, she saw the accident.
The mistake to avoid
Do not use the gerund as a noun the way English does: "reading is useful" is cititul e util (the supine with its article), never citind e util.
Where this fits in
Media și cultură, Romanian B2: Să citim presa cu ochi critic, să recenzăm un film sau o carte și să vorbim despre lectură, folosind gerunziul și vocabularul jurnalistic și cultural.
