To say who you are or where you are from, use the present of a fi: eu sunt, tu ești, el/ea este (e), noi suntem, voi sunteți, ei/ele sunt. Because the ending already shows the person, Romanian normally leaves the subject pronoun out unless you want to stress it.
Examples
- Sunt Ana.
- I'm Ana.
- Ea este din România.
- She is from Romania.
- De unde ești?
- Where are you from?
- Suntem din Spania.
- We're from Spain.
The mistake to avoid
Saying "eu sunt" every time sounds heavy — drop the pronoun unless you are contrasting people.
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Romanian A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
