To talk about regrets and unreal past situations, use aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar + fi + the past participle. The fi is frozen and never changes; only the first word shows the person.
Examples
- Aș fi plecat mai devreme, dar am pierdut trenul.
- I would have left earlier, but I missed the train.
- Ce ai fi făcut în locul meu?
- What would you have done in my place?
- Dacă aș fi știut, nu aș fi venit.
- If I had known, I wouldn't have come.
- Ar fi trebuit să-i spunem adevărul.
- We should have told him the truth.
The mistake to avoid
Conjugating fi ("aș sunt făcut") — fi is invariable in this structure.
