Where English uses "to + verb", Romanian uses să plus a conjugated verb, whose third-person form swaps its ending (el merge becomes să meargă). This follows verbs and expressions of wanting, needing, opinion and possibility: vreau să, trebuie să, este important să, se poate să.
Examples
- Cred că trebuie să discutăm despre asta.
- I think we need to discuss this.
- Este important să ascultăm toate părerile.
- It's important that we listen to all the opinions.
- Vreau să spun că nu sunt de acord.
- I want to say that I don't agree.
- Se poate să ai dreptate.
- You may be right.
The mistake to avoid
Reaching for an infinitive as in English — say "vreau să merg", never "vreau a merge".
Where this fits in
Societate și opinii, Romanian B2: Să dezbatem subiecte abstracte folosind conectori argumentativi, structuri pentru exprimarea opiniei și un registru mai formal.
