With the reporting verb in the past (a spus, a explicat, a avertizat), the reported verb steps back: prezent becomes imperfect, perfectul compus stays or becomes mai-mult-ca-perfect, and the future becomes the conditional. A yes/no question is introduced by dacă, and an order becomes să + conjunctiv.
Examples
- A spus că era obosit și că va suna mai târziu.
- He said he was tired and that he would call later.
- M-a întrebat dacă citisem raportul.
- She asked me whether I had read the report.
- Directorul ne-a cerut să amânăm ședința.
- The director asked us to postpone the meeting.
The mistake to avoid
Romanian keeps the reported verb closer to the original than French or Spanish do: "a spus că vine mâine" is perfectly natural, and forcing a conditional there sounds translated.
Where this fits in
A relata și a negocia, Romanian C1: Să relatăm spusele altora cu distanța cuvenită, să ne descurcăm în registrul profesional al ședințelor și propunerilor și să citim actualitatea: cifre, tendințe și surse.
