When the direct object is a specific person, it is marked with pe and also echoed by an unstressed pronoun (îl, o, îi, le, mă, te) next to the verb — both appear, which sounds redundant but is obligatory. Fronting the pe-phrase then becomes a natural way to shift emphasis in polished speech and writing.
Examples
- L-am văzut pe Andrei ieri.
- I saw Andrei yesterday.
- Pe Maria o cunosc de zece ani.

The mistake to avoid
Dropping the echo pronoun — "Pe Maria cunosc" is ungrammatical, the doubling is not optional.
