Romanian requires the double negative. Nu stays in front of the verb and the second negative word follows: nu... nimic for nothing, nu... nimeni for nobody, nu... niciun for not a single one. Dropping the nu is an error, not a shortcut.

- Nu am înțeles nimic din mesajul lui.
- I did not understand anything in his message.
- Nu este nimeni la serviciul clienți.
- There is nobody at customer service.

Even when nimeni comes first, the nu stays: nimeni nu răspunde.
