To say something hurts, the body part is the subject and the person is a small pronoun in front: mă, te, îl/o, ne, vă, îi. The verb agrees with the body part, so it is doare for one thing and dor for several.
Examples
- Mă doare capul.
- I have a headache.
- Mă dor picioarele.
- My legs hurt.
- Te doare gâtul?
- Does your throat hurt?
- Îl doare stomacul.
- His stomach hurts.
The mistake to avoid
Learners keep doare with a plural body part — use dor: "mă dor ochii".
