When something is given, said or prescribed to someone, Romanian marks that person with îmi, îți, îi, ne or le before the verb. Îi covers both him and her. In the past these shorten: mi-a dat, ți-a spus, i-a prescris.

- Doctorul mi-a prescris niște pastile.
- The doctor prescribed me some pills.
- I-am explicat simptomele.
- I explained the symptoms to him.
- Farmacistul ne-a recomandat siropul acesta.
- The pharmacist recommended this syrup to us.
The mistake to avoid
Îi is the same for a man and a woman - it marks the role, not the gender.
