The trapassato prossimo says that one past action happened before another past action. Form it with the imperfetto of avere or essere plus the past participle: avevo mangiato, ero uscito. With essere the participle agrees with the subject (era uscita, erano usciti).
Examples
- Quando sono arrivato, la festa era già finita.
- When I arrived, the party had already finished.
- Mi ha detto che aveva vissuto tre anni a Milano.
- He told me he had lived in Milan for three years.
- Non avevo mai visto un posto così bello.
- I had never seen such a beautiful place.
The mistake to avoid
Using the passato prossimo for the earlier event flattens the order: "quando sono arrivato, la festa è finita" means it ended as you arrived.
