Finnish has three distances: tämä (here by me), tuo (over there) and se (that one already mentioned). In everyday speech se does most of the work. To ask a price, say paljonko se maksaa?
Examples
- Paljonko tämä paita maksaa?
- How much is this shirt?
- Otan tuon, en tätä.
- I'll take that one, not this one.
- Paljonko nämä kengät maksavat?
- How much are these shoes?
The mistake to avoid
Se refers back to something already mentioned - it is not simply "that over there", which is tuo.
Where this fits in
Food & ordering, Finnish A1: Order at a café or restaurant, ask for the bill, and talk about basic food and drink.
