To tell one person to do something, take the 'I' form of the present tense and drop the final -n: kävelen becomes kävele (walk!), käännyn becomes käänny (turn!). For 'don't', put 'älä' in front of that same form.
Examples
- Käänny oikealle risteyksessä.
- Turn right at the intersection.
- Kävele suoraan eteenpäin sata metriä.
- Walk straight ahead a hundred metres.
- Älä käänny vasemmalle.
- Don't turn left.
- Katso karttaa.
- Look at the map.
The mistake to avoid
Using 'ei' for a negative command - the imperative has its own negative word, 'älä'.
