To say you work or act *as* something, add the essive ending -na/-nä to the noun (opettaja → opettajana). Use -na only if the word contains a, o or u; otherwise use -nä — e and i are neutral vowels, so a word built only from them still takes -nä (esimies → esimiehenä, meri → merenä). Plain "olen opettaja" simply states what you are, without the "as a role" sense.
Examples
- Työskentelen opettajana.
- I work as a teacher. (opettaja has a and o → -na)
- Olen töissä tulkkina.
- I work as an interpreter. (tulkki has u → -na)
- Hän toimii esimiehenä meidän tiimissä.
- She acts as the supervisor of our team. (esimies has only neutral e, i → -nä)
- Toimin insinöörinä.
- I work as an engineer. (insinööri has ö → -nä)
The mistake to avoid
Don't assume a word with only e and i takes -na: those vowels are neutral, so it's esimiehenä and merenä, never *esimiehena.
