Finnish negation is not a word like "not" - it is a verb that conjugates for the person: en, et, ei, emme, ette, eivät. The main verb then loses its own ending and appears in a bare stem form: puhun becomes en puhu.
Examples
- Ei ole vielä yksi.
- It isn't one o'clock yet.
- En työskentele sunnuntaisin.
- I don't work on Sundays.
- Ei, en puhu saksaa.
- No, I don't speak German.
The mistake to avoid
The person is carried by ei, not by the main verb - en puhu, never "en puhun".
