When you add an ending, the consonant in the middle of the word often weakens: kk becomes k, pp becomes p, tt becomes t, and single k, p, t may weaken further or vanish. So kauppa becomes kaupassa and katu becomes kadulla.
Examples
- Menen kauppaan.
- I'm going to the shop.
- Olen kaupassa.
- I'm at the shop.
- Asun kadulla.
- I live on the street.
The mistake to avoid
This is why a word can look different in every sentence - the stem is the same, the middle consonant is not.
