An infinitive clause puts te + infinitive at the end: Ik probeer op tijd te komen. Om ... te states a purpose (Ik bel om een afspraak te maken), door ... te the means (Je leert door te oefenen), zonder ... te what did not happen (Hij vertrok zonder iets te zeggen) and in plaats van ... te the alternative. With a separable verb, te goes between the two parts: om de baas op te bellen.
Examples
- Ik solliciteer om ervaring op te doen.
- I'm applying in order to gain experience.

The mistake to avoid
Modal verbs, laten, gaan and komen take a bare infinitive with no te (Ik moet werken, Ik ga solliciteren); only the om-te family and verbs like proberen, hoeven and dienen add te.
Where this fits in
Work & careers: infinitive constructions, Dutch B2: Apply, work and negotiate in Dutch while mastering the infinitive clauses that carry formal writing: om te for purpose, door te and zonder te for manner, and te after proberen, hoeven and dienen.
