In a Dutch statement the conjugated verb sits in the SECOND slot, whatever fills the first. Begin with a time or a place and the subject jumps behind the verb - Vandaag werk ik thuis. This is the rule that shapes almost every Dutch sentence.
Examples
- Ik woon in Utrecht.
- I live in Utrecht.
- Vandaag werk ik thuis.
- Today I'm working at home.
- In Amsterdam wonen veel studenten.
- A lot of students live in Amsterdam.
The mistake to avoid
The first slot is one ELEMENT, not one word: Op maandag counts as one, so the verb still comes next.
Where this fits in
Greetings & introductions, Dutch A1: Say hello, give your name, ask someone else's, and where they're from.
