Vull is blunt at a counter. Catalan softens a request with voldria, the conditional of voler, or podria for asking someone else to act. Both are followed by a noun or an infinitive, and em pot donar works just as well.

- Podria donar-me un xarop, si us plau?
- Could you give me a syrup, please?
- Necessito això amb recepta?
- Do I need a prescription for this?
The mistake to avoid
Voldria is a request; volia is what you wanted and no longer do.
