Once the thing is known, Catalan replaces it with a weak pronoun before the verb: el, la, els, les. Before a vowel el and la shorten to l', and after a verb ending in a vowel they attach with an apostrophe or a hyphen.
Examples
- La cuina? La netejo els dissabtes.
- The kitchen? I clean it on Saturdays.
- La brossa, la trec cada nit.
- The rubbish, I take it out every night.
- Els plats els renta el meu germà.
- My brother washes the dishes.
The mistake to avoid
Catalan repeats the object with a pronoun even when it also names it.
