When something is given, said or prescribed to someone, Catalan marks that person with em, et, li, ens or els before the verb. Li covers both him and her. These attach to an infinitive or an imperative: donar-li, digues-me.
Examples
- El metge em va receptar unes pastilles.
- The doctor prescribed me some pills.
- Li vaig explicar els símptomes.
- I explained the symptoms to him.
- Ens han donat hora per dimarts.
- They have given us an appointment for Tuesday.
The mistake to avoid
Li is the same for a man and a woman - it marks the role, not the gender.
Where this fits in
Salut i cos, Catalan A2: Say what hurts, describe your symptoms at the doctor's, and talk about healthy habits.
