Swedish has no separate word for 'the'. You attach the ending to the noun instead: en buss becomes bussen, ett tåg becomes tåget, and in the plural bussar becomes bussarna, tåg becomes tågen.
Examples
- Tåget går klockan sju från stationen.
- The train leaves at seven from the station.
- Hotellet ligger nära centrum.
- The hotel is near the centre.
- Var kan jag köpa biljetten?
- Where can I buy the ticket?
- Bussarna till flygplatsen går varje kvart.
- The buses to the airport go every fifteen minutes.
The mistake to avoid
Saying *den buss for 'the bus' - den/det only appear when an adjective is added (den röda bussen), and even then the ending stays.
