For a finished action at a stated past time, use preteritum. Most verbs are regular: add -ade to the stem (prata - pratade), or -de/-te to stems ending in a consonant (ring - ringde, köp - köpte). Everyday verbs like gå, se and sova are irregular and must be learnt.
Examples
- Jag pratade med Anna igår.
- I talked to Anna yesterday.
- Vi köpte en bil förra veckan.
- We bought a car last week.
- Han sov länge på lördagen.
- He slept late on Saturday.
- Vad gjorde du i somras?
- What did you do last summer?
The mistake to avoid
Using har + supine (har pratat) with a fixed past time - with igår or förra veckan Swedish wants the plain preteritum.
Where this fits in
Talking about the past, Swedish A2: Tell stories about yesterday, last weekend, and life experiences using the preteritum (simple past).
