If you say when something happened, Swedish uses preteritum: igår besökte jag. If you leave the time open and only report that it happened, it uses har plus the supine. That is why förra helgen takes reste, not har rest.
Examples
- Förra helgen reste jag till Malmö.
- Last weekend I travelled to Malmö.
- Jag har besökt många museer.
- I have visited a lot of museums.
- Igår träffade jag en gammal vän.
- Yesterday I met an old friend.
The mistake to avoid
A named past time blocks har: igår reste jag, never "igår har jag rest".
Where this fits in
Talking about the past, Swedish A2: Tell stories about yesterday, last weekend, and life experiences using the preteritum (simple past).
