Every Swedish noun is either an en-word or an ett-word, and it must be learned with the noun. The gender decides the definite ending - en bil becomes bilen, ett rum becomes rummet - and whether an adjective takes -t: ett stort rum, en stor bil.
Examples
- Jag skulle vilja boka ett dubbelrum.
- I would like to book a double room.
- Rummet är litet, men frukosten är god.
- The room is small, but the breakfast is good.
- Vi söker ett lugnt hotell i centrum.
- We are looking for a quiet hotel in the centre.
The mistake to avoid
Roughly three quarters of Swedish nouns are en-words, but the rest must be memorised.
