To talk about unreal situations, use the past-tense form of the verb plus the particle бы — it works for past, present and future alike, since Russian has no separate conditional tense. In an if-clause, put бы after если as well, so both halves carry it.

- Если бы я знал, я бы тебе сказал.
- If I had known, I would have told you.
- Я бы хотела поговорить с вами.
- I would like to talk with you.
- На твоём месте я бы не согласился.
- In your place I would not have agreed.
- Если бы у нас было больше времени, мы бы остались.
- If we had more time, we would stay.
The mistake to avoid
Using the future after бы ("я бы скажу") — бы only ever combines with a past-tense form.
