Written Russian compresses a clause like «который читает» into a participle: читающий (present active), читавший (past active), прочитанный (past passive). A participle agrees with its noun like an adjective, and the short passive form (прочитан, прочитана) works as a predicate: книга прочитана.
Examples

The mistake to avoid
Participles belong to written and formal speech: in conversation Russians say «фильм, который сняли», not «снятый фильм». Don't reach for them to sound natural in chat.
