European Portuguese normally hangs the pronoun off the end of the verb: resolvo-o. But certain words in front of the verb drag the pronoun forward with them: não, nunca, já, também, and any question word or que. This is the single most audible marker of correct Portuguese.
Examples
- Não me lembro do que aconteceu.
- I do not remember what happened.
- Já lhe disse que tratamos disso.
- I have already told him that we will deal with it.
- Não se preocupe, nós resolvemos.
- Do not worry, we will sort it out.
The mistake to avoid
Never hyphenate after não: não me lembro, never "não lembro-me".
Where this fits in
Telefone, mensagens e pequenos problemas, Portuguese A2: Telefonar e escrever, pedir desculpa, esclarecer um mal-entendido e pedir ajuda: o dia a dia quando alguma coisa não corre como estava previsto.
