Portuguese has three distances: este (here by me), esse (there by you) and aquele (over there). Each agrees with its noun. To ask a price, use quanto custa? for one thing and quanto custam? for several.
Examples
- Quanto custa esta camisa?
- How much is this shirt?
- Quero esse, não este.
- I want that one, not this one.
- Quanto custam estes sapatos?
- How much are these shoes?
The mistake to avoid
Custa or custam follows the thing being bought - two shoes custam.
