A noun ending in a vowel adds -s and one ending in a consonant usually adds -es. Words ending in -ão have three possible plurals and have to be learnt (pão becomes pães, mão becomes mãos), and words ending in -l swap it for -is: hotel becomes hotéis.
Examples
- Tenho dois irmãos e três primas.
- I have two brothers and three cousins.
- Os hotéis estão cheios.
- The hotels are full.
- Queria dois cafés, por favor.
- I'd like two coffees, please.
The mistake to avoid
The article moves too: o hotel becomes os hotéis, never "os hotel".
