In European Portuguese the possessive normally comes with the article: o meu pai, a minha mãe, os meus pais, as minhas irmãs - and it agrees with the thing owned, not the owner. For his and her, dele and dela go AFTER the noun: o carro dele (his car), a casa dela (her house).
Examples
- O meu pai chama-se Rui.
- My father is called Rui.
- A minha irmã mora em Lisboa.
- My sister lives in Lisbon.
- Como se chama o teu filho?
- What is your son called?
- A casa dela é muito grande.
- Her house is very big.
The mistake to avoid
Seu and sua can mean his, her, your or their, so speakers prefer dele and dela for his and her.
Where this fits in
Family & people, Portuguese A1: Talk about your family, say what people are like and how old they are, and introduce your friends.
