Portuguese pairs não before the verb with a second negative word after it: não... nada for nothing, não... ninguém for nobody, não... nunca mais for never again. If the negative word comes first instead, the não drops out.
Examples
- Não percebi nada da mensagem dele.
- I did not understand anything in his message.
- Não está ninguém no apoio ao cliente.
- There is nobody at customer support.
- Ninguém me avisou do erro.
- Nobody told me about the mistake.
The mistake to avoid
Two negatives are correct here - não... nada is normal Portuguese.
Where this fits in
Telefone, mensagens e pequenos problemas, Portuguese A2: Telefonar e escrever, pedir desculpa, esclarecer um mal-entendido e pedir ajuda: o dia a dia quando alguma coisa não corre como estava previsto.
