You have already met this in dói-me. The same set marks whoever something is given, said or prescribed to: me, te, lhe, nos, lhes. Lhe covers both him and her, and in European Portuguese it attaches to the verb unless a negative pulls it forward.

- The doctor prescribed me some pills.
- Já lhe expliquei os sintomas.
- I have already explained the symptoms to him.
- O farmacêutico não nos recomendou esse xarope.
- The pharmacist did not recommend that syrup to us.
The mistake to avoid
Lhe is the same for a man and a woman - it marks the role, not the gender.
