To ask whether someone has ever done something, Portuguese uses já with the simple past: já foste a Lisboa? The answers are já for yes, ainda não for not yet, and nunca for never. Nunca before the verb needs no não; after the verb it does.
Examples
- Já provaste o pastel de nata?
- Have you ever tried a pastel de nata?
- Ainda não vi esse filme.
- I have not seen that film yet.
- Nunca estive no Brasil.
- I have never been to Brazil.
The mistake to avoid
Não nunca is wrong before the verb: nunca estive, not "não nunca estive".
Where this fits in
Falar do passado, Portuguese A2: Contar o que fez ontem, no fim de semana passado, e as suas experiências de vida com o pretérito perfeito.
