Portuguese has two ways to report a symptom. Estar com plus the symptom frames it as temporary and is the everyday choice: estou com febre. Ter states it more flatly: tenho tosse. Both take the noun directly, and dor de plus a body part covers aches.
Examples
- Estou com febre e dor de garganta.
- I have a fever and a sore throat.
- Ele tem tosse desde segunda-feira.
- He has had a cough since Monday.
- Tens dor de cabeça?
- Do you have a headache?
The mistake to avoid
Estou doente says you are ill in general; it does not name the symptom.
