European Portuguese describes what is happening right now with estar a + the infinitive: estou a ler (I'm reading), ela está a usar um casaco (she's wearing a coat). The simple present is for habits: uso sempre ténis (I always wear trainers).
Examples
- Hoje ela está a usar um vestido azul.
- Today she's wearing a blue dress.
- O que estás a fazer?
- What are you doing?
- Estou a vestir o casaco.
- I'm putting my coat on.
The mistake to avoid
In Brazil you will hear estou usando instead; both are correct, and this course follows European Portuguese.
Where this fits in
Colours, clothes & likes, Portuguese A1: Name colours and clothes, buy something in the right size, and say what you like and don't like.
