To ask a stranger for directions, Portuguese avoids the word for "you" and uses o senhor / a senhora with the he/she form of the verb. Open with "Desculpe" and the question stays polite without any special verb form.
Examples
- Desculpe, o senhor sabe onde fica a estação?
- Excuse me, do you know where the station is?
- A senhora pode indicar-me o caminho?
- Could you show me the way?
- Desculpe, como se vai para o centro?
- Excuse me, how do you get to the centre?
The mistake to avoid
Using "tu" with a stranger sounds abrupt - "tu sabes onde fica?" is for friends.
Where this fits in
