Polish counts in three patterns. One takes the nominative singular: jeden pokój. Two, three and four take the nominative plural: dwa pokoje. Five and above take the genitive plural: pięć pokoi. Numbers ending in 2, 3 or 4 follow the second pattern, except the teens.
Examples
- Chciałbym zarezerwować jeden pokój.
- I would like to book one room.
- Zostajemy trzy noce.
- We are staying three nights.
- Hotel ma pięć pokoi z widokiem.
- The hotel has five rooms with a view.
The mistake to avoid
The teens all take the genitive: dwanaście pokoi, not "dwanaście pokoje".
