The thing a verb acts on goes into the accusative. Feminine nouns swap their -a for -ę: kawa becomes kawę. Inanimate masculine and all neuter nouns do not change at all. Only animate masculine nouns take -a, which is why it is widzę psa but piję sok.
Examples
- Jem śniadanie o siódmej.
- I eat breakfast at seven.
- Piję kawę w drodze do pracy.
- I drink coffee on the way to work.
- Robię przerwę o dwunastej.
- I take a break at twelve.
The mistake to avoid
Neuter and inanimate masculine look identical to the dictionary form - nothing to change.
