With the introducing verb in the past (ha detto, ha spiegato, ha avvertito), the reported verb steps back: presente becomes imperfetto, passato prossimo becomes trapassato prossimo, and futuro becomes condizionale composto. A yes/no question is introduced by se, and an order becomes di + infinito.
Examples
- Ha detto che era stanco e che avrebbe richiamato più tardi.
- He said he was tired and that he would call back later.
- Mi ha chiesto se avessi letto la relazione.
- She asked me whether I had read the report.
- Il direttore ci ha chiesto di rinviare la riunione.
- The director asked us to postpone the meeting.
The mistake to avoid
The future in the past is the condizionale COMPOSTO (avrebbe richiamato), not the simple one - "ha detto che richiamerebbe" is the mistake almost every English speaker makes.
