Nouns and adjectives ending in -ca and -ga add an h in the plural to keep the hard sound: la giacca, le giacche; lunga, lunghe. Many ending in -co and -go do the same (il parco, i parchi; lungo, lunghi), but some soften instead: l'amico, gli amici.
Examples
- Le giacche sono nell'armadio.
- The jackets are in the wardrobe.
- Questi pantaloni sono lunghi.
- These trousers are long.
- Ho due amici a Napoli.
- I have two friends in Naples.
The mistake to avoid
Writing "le giacce" changes the sound to a soft c - the h is what keeps it hard.
Where this fits in
