To give an opinion in Italian, verbs like penso che, credo che, mi sembra che and dubito che take the present subjunctive, not the indicative. Form it by dropping the infinitive ending and adding -i, -i, -i, -iamo, -iate, -ino to -are verbs (parlare → parli) and -a, -a, -a, -iamo, -iate, -ano to -ere/-ire verbs (scrivere → scriva, dormire → dorma); common irregulars are sia (essere), abbia (avere), faccia (fare) and possa (potere). Verbs of certainty like so che and è vero che keep the indicative, and if the subject of both halves is the same you drop che and use di + infinitive.
Examples
- Penso che il mio lavoro sia troppo stressante.
- I think my job is too stressful.
- Credo che molti giovani non trovino un contratto stabile.
- I believe that many young people don't find a stable contract.
- Mi sembra che l'università prepari poco al mondo del lavoro.
- It seems to me that university prepares you poorly for the world of work.
- Penso di cambiare lavoro l'anno prossimo.
- I'm thinking of changing jobs next year.
The mistake to avoid
Learners use the indicative after an opinion verb — "Penso che il mio lavoro è stressante" must be "Penso che il mio lavoro sia stressante".
