For an unreal or unlikely situation, Italian uses se + congiuntivo imperfetto in the if-clause and the condizionale presente in the other clause: Se avessi tempo, verrei. The condizionale never goes in the se-clause.
Examples
- Se potessi, andrei a vivere in Italia.
- If I could, I'd go and live in Italy.
- Se vincessi la lotteria, comprerei una casa al mare.
- If I won the lottery, I'd buy a house by the sea.
- Se fossi in te, accetterei quel lavoro.
- If I were you, I'd accept that job.
The mistake to avoid
"Se avrei tempo" is a classic error — after se you need avessi, never the conditional.
