Italian turns "I like" around: the thing you like is the subject, and you are the person it pleases. So it is mi piace for one thing or an activity (mi piace la musica, mi piace ballare) and mi piacciono for several (mi piacciono i gatti). Ti piace? asks "do you like?"
Examples
- Mi piace il caffè.
- I like coffee.
- Mi piacciono i gatti.
- I like cats.
- Ti piace ballare?
- Do you like dancing?
The mistake to avoid
"Io piaccio la musica" is wrong - the music does the pleasing: mi piace la musica.
Where this fits in
Colours, clothes & likes, Italian A1: Name colours and clothes, buy something in the right size, and say what you like and don't like.
