When one noun belongs to another, the second goes into the genitive and often changes its ending: an leabhar becomes clúdach an leabhair. The first noun loses its own article, so Irish says clúdach an leabhair, never an clúdach an leabhair.
Examples
- Is maith liom clúdach an leabhair.
- I like the cover of the book.
- Bhí ceol an ghrúpa go hiontach.
- The band's music was wonderful.
- Tá deireadh an scannáin an-mhaith.
- The end of the film is very good.
The mistake to avoid
Only one article is allowed in the phrase, and it goes with the second noun.
