Irish has only eleven irregular verbs, but they are the commonest ones and their past forms look nothing like the present. Téigh gives chuaigh, bí gives bhí, déan gives rinne, feic gives chonaic, faigh gives fuair, tar gives tháinig.
Examples
- Chuaigh mé go Corcaigh anuraidh.
- I went to Cork last year.
- Chonaic muid an caisleán.
- We saw the castle.
- Fuair mé bronntanas deas ann.
- I got a nice present there.
The mistake to avoid
These take no d' and no lenition of their own - the form already carries the past.
Where this fits in
