Irish has a special verb form that reports an action with nobody named as doer — handy for general claims. In the present it ends in -tar/-tear (deirtear, ceaptar); in the past it ends in -adh/-íodh (foilsíodh, dúradh). It never takes a subject pronoun.
Examples
- Deirtear go bhfuil an fhadhb ag dul in olcas.
- It is said that the problem is getting worse.
- Ceaptar gur cheart níos mó a dhéanamh.
- It is thought that more should be done.
- Foilsíodh an tuarascáil anuraidh.
- The report was published last year.
The mistake to avoid
Adding a pronoun or an "ag" agent ("deirtear sé", "deirtear ag daoine") — the autonomous form is complete on its own.
